Haydn’s works are not organised into time order but by genres, types of works. Exhausting just thinking about it, isn’t it?īut here’s where things get more complicated. His works have "Hob" standing for his cataloguer, Hoboken, and the catalogue is nearly 2,000 pages long. So Mozart’s works are K (or KV), again numbered in the order they were written. His works were catalogued by a chap called Köchel, and he decided to use his initial instead of an opus number. ![]() Mozart's music doesn't use opus numbers, though. The first of the trios in E flat is from Beethoven’s Opus 1, the other is from Opus 70. Opus numbers help us to identify which is which. But the problem is that he wrote not one, but two piano trios in E flat, 14 years apart. So if I wanted to listen to Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E flat, it seems like a logical enough description, precise even. Opus numbers can help us to understand if music was composed early or late in a composer's career, and help to identify classical music that has very general titles. You will often see the word abbreviated to Op. An opus number is the work number assigned for a composition, or a set of compositions, in the approximate order in which a composer wrote something. ![]()
